Foreign students in the grandes ecoles
The following data is compiled from two surveys carried out by the Conférence des Grandes Ecoles (CGE) among its members in 2003:
1) International students in the Grandes Ecoles during the year 2001-2002; this is the 3rd update of this survey, which shows:
- numbers of students studying in first degree courses leading to a Grande Ecole degree
- numbers of students studying a selection of first degree courses not resulting in a qualification. The majority of these students will be awarded credit for their period of study, either in the form of ECTS credits, or recognition by their home university.
The figures also include:
- students in post-graduate programmes: DEA (Diploma of Advanced Studies), DESS (Diplôme d'Etudes Supérieures Spécialisées), Doctorat (PhD), Mastères spécialisés, MSc, MBA, etc
- students studying within the framework of a double-degree agreement.
2) For the first time, the International Commission wanted to obtain a global view of student mobility in the Grandes Ecoles. A second survey was carried out to determine:
- numbers of students from Grandes Ecoles studying abroad in universities and institutions of higher education,
- numbers of students from Grandes Ecoles in internships abroad.
The figures are given for the year 2001-2002.

KEY FIGURES
RESPONSE TO THE SURVEY:
- 116 out of 137 engineering schools
- 27 out of 20 management schools
- 12 out of 16 other schools.
1) INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN THE GRANDES ECOLES
19,500 international students are currently registered in member schools of the CGE, representing:
an increase of 17% compared to the 2001 survey
approximately 20% of the total number of students in the Grandes Ecoles (about 100.000 students).
59% are taking courses in order to obtain the degree of the institution concerned (a numerical increase of 19%);
41% are taking courses not leading to a qualification, which means that less than half the students are seeking credits for coursework (a numerical increase of 14%).
The international students come from 134 different countries.
2) FRENCH STUDENTS ABROAD
- For study :
9.231 students from Grandes Ecoles studied abroad in 2001-2002.
approximately 2.000 students on courses leading to a first degree (22%) ;
approximately 1.000 students on post-graduate courses
and 6.286 students on courses not leading to a degree or qualification (67%).
Note: the 3 most popular destinations account for 44% of French students abroad:
United Kingdom : 1599 students
United States of America : 1420 students
Canada : 972 students
Closely followed by:
Spain : 962 students
Germany : 849 students.
- Internships abroad:
12000 internships have been recorded.
2/3 of which were undertaken by students from engineering schools
1/3 by students from management schools
Few internships are shorter than one month : 558 students
The most frequent durations being from 1 to 3 months : 4784 students
and from 3 to 6 months : 5267 students
